My Story
Jefferson Yap Shui Jing (born 1986) is an established alto saxophonist with a golden tone. His music education and passion for the saxophone began at the age of 13, when he joined the band in his secondary school. He was awarded his Licentiate Diploma of Trinity College London (LTCL) in Saxophone in 2007, and ABRSM Grade 7 Theory in 2008.
One of the most outstanding and prolific saxophonists in Singapore, Jefferson is a classical, pop and jazz performer and was a featured artist in the 2008 SG Band Fusion Online Interview. Jefferson has also participated in many local and international saxophone competitions.
His performing career started when he joined the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band in 2006 after graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. During his time in the SAF Central Band, Jefferson represented the nation in numerous International Military Band Tattoo Festivals in India, Malaysia and China.
A virtuosic saxophonist, Jefferson was the Jazz Soloist during the SAF Big Band Concert “Get in Line” in 2008, and also played a saxophone concerto, Duex Movements, as a guest with the Nanyang Polytechnic Symphony Orchestra in 2012. Since then, Jefferson has performed solo with many groups including the “Lush Pop Orchestra” and the “Saxpress Saxophone Quartet” at many places such as the Esplanade and the NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre.
Actively involved in music, Jefferson is currently the Principal Saxophonist of Windstars Ensemble and serves as an artist for the Lush Entertainment Group since 2009. He is also a member of Compass Music.

Jefferson Yap is currently the tutor of the ACS(I) Saxophone section. A patient and meticulous educator, he has a particular emphasis on the instrumental and theoretical musical fundamentals. This was greatly beneficial to our section’s growth as musicians and facility with the saxophone. Jefferson is endowed with innate musical interpretation but does not forcibly impose it on our section. In contrast, we are prompted to independently rediscover and appreciate the composer’s artistic genius. One that has great regard for aural training, Jefferson has enhanced our section’s intonation and generated a distinctive sound we are proud of. Under his mentorship and guidance, a section mate passed his grade 8 saxophone exam in a mere 2 months. With Jefferson’s leadership of the ACS(I) saxophone section, ‘ the instrument disappears and music reveals itself’.

I studied under Jefferson during my army days in 2010. Although I was relatively new to saxophone playing, Jefferson did not hesitate to expose me to a wide range of saxophone music, from Dave Koz, to the Tomasi concerto. Without doubt, I spent some of the most joyful moments, and learnt a lot about the fundamentals of saxophone from Jefferson. In 2010, I managed to score a distinction for my Grade 8 Saxophone exam, all thanks to the patient guidance from my teacher. I’m currently a university student in Japan, and continuing saxophone lessons over here as well. Thanks a lot Jeff!

Jefferson simply did an excellent job at repairing my horn at a reasonable price. He knows the saxophone inside out and my horn basically felt as if it was brand new!
I highly recommend him to all players out there! Try to believe it.
